Flight to Tallinn

This was a travel day. We used our transit passes to take the metro to Central Terminal, and then onto a commuter train out to Mastra station. It was a much newer, quieter, more modern commuter train than on the way in. At Mastra, the bus to Arlanda Airport Terminal 5 was waiting, first in the queue. It couldn’t have been easier.

As we were waiting to board our flight, we got a text from Katherine. Her Friday flight had been cancelled due to an SAS pilot strike. She was re-routed, and got to Stockholm a day late and with poorer connections. While we sat at the gate in Terminal 5, she was in the same airport at Terminal 3! She arrived in Tallin a couple hours after we did. If the airline gods do not smile on you, sometimes the “direct” flight takes as long, or longer, than the round-about flight.

We took the tram from Tallinn Airport into the city. It was not as easy as Stockholm, as everything is in Estonian with no English. Also, the tram stops were very poorly marked. We wound up getting off one stop too early. The first woman we asked tried to help us, but she had no English. A young man assisted us, and sent us on a somewhat longer walk. But we finally arrived OK.

We are staying in an apartment — sort of like an Air B&B but that’s not how we booked it. It is on the 4th floor with no elevator, so we get our exercise, but it is quite nice, with a full kitchen, etc. It is located right in the Old Town, just a long block down the cobblestone street to the Town Square. The Old Town is very compact, so everything is a short walk from here. It is full of tourists, but a very well-preserved Medieval city full of picturesque old churches, guild halls, and other buildings.

We met Katherine for dinner and attended one of the music festival concerts in the evening.
